Planned Parenthood statement on Maine Attorney General's response to GOP AG threat regarding LD 227
For Immediate Release: March 12, 2024
“We applaud Attorney General Frey for his swift and reasoned response to the politically motivated threat from Republican attorneys general regarding LD 227. This bill aims to protect providers of reproductive care and care for transgender people that is safe and legal in Maine.
Republican attorneys general from 16 states signed a letter threatening hostile action against our state should our own lawmakers pass a bill that protects providers of reproductive care and care for transgender people from attacks. It should surprise no one that state legislators in all 16 of those states passed laws banning abortion, including Montana, where a judge last month declared those laws unconstitutional. And 14 of those 16 states have banned best-practice medical care for transgender minors.
Attorney General Frey’s response outlining the merits of LD 227, along with the supportive comments from our elected leaders over the past week, displays a resolve that Mainers can be proud of. Maine will not succumb to baseless attacks, particularly attacks that only serve to emphasize the need for the very legislation they aim to destroy. This letter from Republican attorneys general underscores how real these threats are in this uncharted, post-Roe landscape—and how critical it is for Maine to protect our providers, patients and our health care infrastructure from out of state interference.
Make no mistake: People opposed to safe, legal medical care in Maine will not stop their assault on our rights. But Mainers can take heart in knowing that leaders like Attorney General Frey, Governor Mills, and our lawmakers won’t stop fighting for our rights and freedoms.”
