Statement from Lisa Margulies, Esq., Vice President of Public Affairs, Planned Parenthood Maine Action Fund, on the Maine House of Representative’s engrossment vote to advance LD 780

“A majority of lawmakers voted to advance LD 780 today and affirmed their commitment to letting Maine voters weigh in on the future of reproductive autonomy in our state. These champions understand what’s at stake in a tumultuous post-Roe landscape -- access to essential, lifesaving health care and giving Mainers the opportunity to speak on their fundamental rights at the ballot box.

More of our elected leaders will need to vote for this bill during the next round in both legislative chambers. Every lawmaker can count on Mainers taking note of whether their elected representatives chose to let Mainers have a voice at the ballot box or whether their lawmakers chose to silence them.

Everyone deserves the right to make reproductive health care decisions without interference from politicians, and Mainers deserve to know their rights won’t hang in the balance every election cycle. It’s time to explicitly enshrine the right to reproductive autonomy in Maine’s state constitution.”
