In this period of social distancing, solidarity may feel like inaction. It’s the choice, for the greater good, to not do our typical activities: work, visit friends, support our favorite restaurants, or rally in Saint Paul.

But physical isolation does not change our dedication to the mission. We continue to believe that every person—no matter who they are, where they live, who they love, or how much money they have in the bank—must be in control of their own body. We continue to believe that every person deserves expert sexual health care and comprehensive sex education. We continue to believe in progress and community.

Our values guide us—this does not change during a pandemic—and there are many ways we can advocate for these values during these times. We hope you will take a moment to act from anywhere today.

1. Ensure Everyone Gets Counted in the Census

The 2020 Census is vitally important. The count determines each state’s congressional representation, and Minnesota is currently at risk of losing a seat. The census also informs hundreds of billions in federal funding every year—about $3,000 of funding is provided per Minnesotan per year based on census data. An accurate count will help get necessary resources to our communities in the next decade.

Virtual census outreach is essential during this time. Many organizations—including Planned Parenthood North Central States—are shifting tactics around census outreach due to social distancing. You can help by spreading the word that the census can be completed online. Fill out the census at 2020census.gov today, then help a friend do the same!

2. Renew Your Voter Registration

Minnesotans can determine their own futures through their vote. One of the most powerful ways of empowering and strengthening our communities is supporting everyone to make their voices heard through the ballot box.

Every person must be registered at their current address in order to vote. Take a moment today to ask three friends if they have renewed their voter registration at their current address.

3. Let People Know Planned Parenthood is Here with You

During the COVID-19 outbreak, Planned Parenthood has expanded its online health services whenever possible to keep patients and staff safe during this pandemic.

From birth control to transgender hormone therapy to STI consultation and treatment, you can now have a virtual visit with one of Planned Parenthood’s expert providers for a wide range of sexual health services. If you are in need of health care, visit the Planned Parenthood page or call 1.800.230.PLAN (7526). Then, let your friends and family know that Planned Parenthood will continue to be here with you. No matter what.

4. Help Ensure a Patient Receives the Care They Need

Our friends and neighbors are losing their jobs and losing their insurance—but their health care needs can’t wait. If you are able to give a gift today, any amount is appreciated. Your gift will go to someone who needs Planned Parenthood’s essential reproductive health care in these uncertain times. Give now to help a patient get the care they need.

5. Share Your Story

Some people don’t understand everything that Planned Parenthood does—but you do, and your voice can make a difference. Your story will help show lawmakers, the media, and supporters just what we're fighting for in the weeks and months to come.

Whether you received expert care at Planned Parenthood, took part in affirming, comprehensive sex ed, or found your community while advocating for the issues that matter to you: we want to hear your story. Share it now.

Our organizers are developing virtual activities for our volunteers. These may include texting to register voters, phone banks to get everyone counted in the census, virtual trainings, or other opportunities to take part in our advocacy work from anywhere. Sign up to volunteer.

Over the last several weeks, this community has proven that no matter what is going on in the world, we are in this together and we will take care of each other. No matter how you choose to act today, thank you.
