Legislators pass historic progress for sexual and reproductive health care, while opponents strongly object and even ask South Dakota Governor to interfere

St. Paul, MN — The Minnesota legislative session has come to an end, marking historic investments in sexual and reproductive health care. Less than a month into session, the Protect Reproductive Options Act passed, codifying the right to all reproductive services into state law. Other landmark legislation like the Trans Refuge Bill and Reproductive Freedom Defense Act passed, allowing health care decisions to stay between doctors and their patients, and protecting patients traveling to Minnesota from out of state for health care.

While Republicans in Minnesota and across the country have pushed an extreme agenda to ban abortion and limit reproductive rights, Minnesota Democrats have protected access to abortion care and expanded access to birth control.

Statement from Tim Stanley, executive director of Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota Action Fund:

“Decades of pent-up need was met with swift action from the new pro-choice trifecta. This historic session will change the lives of Minnesotans for generations to come. As states across the country and around the region ban access to health care, Minnesota has become a leader in not only protecting rights but expanding access to essential health care. And it’s important to note that Minnesota Republicans objected to the progress every step of the way.

We’ve expanded access to birth control, increased funding for family planning services, protected doctors and patients in Minnesota from out of state persecution. Minnesota has sent a message: you belong here, and we will support you as you make decisions about your body and future.”
