In a victory for Planned Parenthood, the U.S. Supreme Court denied review of two appellate court decisions which found that terminating Planned Parenthood providers from the Medicaid program likely violated patients’ rights. Three Justices (Thomas, Alito and Gorsuch) dissented, saying they would have taken the cases.

Statement from Sarah Stoesz, President and CEO, Planned Parenthood North Central States:

“While there is no doubt that the new Supreme Court remains very conservative, this development is welcome news for our patients and our mission. Defunding Planned Parenthood is a dangerous and deeply unpopular attack on women’s access to health care. Today, the Supreme Court said it is also likely a violation of patients’ rights.”

“Planned Parenthood plays a critical role in our state’s public health infrastructure. Each year, 72,000 people rely on us for reproductive health care including birth control, lifesaving breast and cervical cancer screenings, and testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Blocking patients from this care at Planned Parenthood clinics in other states has had disastrous public health consequences.”

“Today and every day, Planned Parenthood’s top priority is the health and safety of our patients. For the women, men, and young people we serve, the care we provide isn’t about politics—it’s about their health and well-being.”
