MoLeg Update

Last week, the Missouri Senate defeated an effort to ensure pregnant people get medically accurate information. Sen. Jason Holsman (D-7, Kansas City), offered an amendment to a funding bill which would have required taxpayer-funded Alternatives to Abortion agencies to provide medically accurate information to the pregnant people who use their services. These agencies, sometimes known as crisis pregnancy centers, often provide clients false and misleading information designed to shame them into continuing a pregnancy. Senators Chappelle-Nadal (D-14, St. Louis County), Curls (D-9, Kansas City), and Schupp (D-24, St. Louis County) spoke in favor of the amendment, but all 23 Republican senators voted against providing accurate information to pregnant Missourians. Sen. Holsman’s amendment also restored patient’s access to Planned Parenthood (discussed in the section below).

Stand Up for Access to Birth Control!

Jefferson City politicians are using the state budget to deny patients access to birth control, cancer screenings, and STI tests.

The federal Medicaid program allows Missourians with low incomes to access this care at the provider of their choice — but lawmakers are trying to block these patients from choosing certain providers, including Planned Parenthood.

What will this mean? Many patients will have nowhere else to go for this vital preventive health care. And if that weren’t enough, it would risk Missouri’s entire Medicaid program by violating federal law. Take a moment and contact your state senator now!
