SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A coalition of Springfield advocates, joined together as part of a National Day of Action to stop the Senate from giving Trump’s nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, a lifetime appointment. Storytellers, people of faith, Planned Parenthood supporters, and advocates for workers rights and racial justice gathered at the Planned Parenthood Health Center and called on Missouri’s U.S. senators, Roy Blunt and Claire McCaskill, to reject Kavanaugh’s nomination.

“Kavanaugh’s record makes it clear that he is a threat to Roe v. Wade,” said Stacy Sherrod, a patient and organizer with Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri. “Nothing less than our constitutional right to safe, legal abortion is on the line.”

Judge Kavanaugh has also ruled to restrict access to birth control. In calling on her senators to reject his nomination, Melissa Cragin of Springfield said, “We need a justice who ensures access to all reproductive health care. Kavanaugh is the wrong choice.”

Reverend Colin Douglas, a minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), also urged Sens. Blunt and McCaskill to reject Kavanaugh’s nomination because of his record opposing reproductive rights. “I support reproductive rights because they’re human rights.”

Michelle Creed, a nurse and Jobs with Justice member, added, “Confirming this judge to the Supreme Court could return us to the days of insurance companies denying our friends, families, and neighbors access to health care for their pre-existing conditions. Lives are at stake.”
