Protecting access to Planned Parenthood
For too long politicians have been seeking ways to defund Planned Parenthood. The reality of that means stripping access to quality, affordable, and essential healthcare for millions. No one deserves to have their healthcare ripped from them because of a politician’s political agenda. In the face of these harmful and relentless attacks, we will not back down, and we will continue to serve all who need care.
The Harms of “Defunding” Planned Parenthood
On July 4, 2025 President Trump signed into law H.R.1 which included a provision that prohibits Planned Parenthood health centers from receiving federal Medicaid funds for one year.
What is the impact in NY?
The five NY Planned Parenthood affiliates operate 47 health centers throughout the state, serving more than 200,000 patients annually – over 50% of whom rely on Medicaid coverage. Together, they are one of the largest providers of family planning, abortion and gender-affirming care in the state – with more than 60% of their health centers located in rural or medically underserved communities. HR 1 eliminates a significant amount of funding Planned Parenthood affiliates rely on to provide sexual and reproductive health care services - like birth control, STI testing and treatment, well-person visits, cancer screenings, and more - to low-income New Yorkers. The loss of this funding would have a devastating impact on Planned Parenthoods' ability to provide care to all who need it.
Recognizing this impact, Governor Kathy Hochul announced the allocation of $35M in state funding to address the loss of federal Medicaid funds.
However, the impact of the defund provision has been felt across the country. Check out Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s recent report detailing the on the ground hardship this is creating. The data is stark, and underlines why New York's actions to backfill this loss were so essential.
How We Fight Back
New York has been a longstanding leader in access to sexual and reproductive health. To continue this legacy, we must make investments and pass crucial legislation into law so every New Yorker can have access to safe, quality, and lifesaving care.
