PPAF endorsed candidates for Governor, Lt. Governor, and Attorney General who will be bold, effective, unapologetic champions for reproductive rights

BOSTON – Just five days after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and eliminated federal constitutional abortion protections, the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts (PPAF) announced its first round of endorsements in the 2022 election: Maura Healey for Governor, Kim Driscoll for Lieutenant Governor, and Andrea Campbell for Attorney General.

“As millions of people lose access to abortion and politicians threaten to restrict all reproductive rights across the country, we need State leaders that are bold, effective, unapologetic champions for sexual and reproductive health and rights to ensure Massachusetts remains a beacon for reproductive freedom and a safe place to access care. That is the leadership we have seen and can expect from Maura Healey, Kim Driscoll, and Andrea Campbell, and PPAF is proud to endorse their candidacies,” said Dr. Jennifer Childs-Roshak, president of the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts.

PPAF endorses candidates who have strong records supporting sexual and reproductive health access and who will continue to prioritize the health and wellbeing of Planned Parenthood patients in the face of unprecedented attacks on bodily autonomy and the most severe restrictions on sexual and reproductive health care in 50 years. While the right to abortion is protected in Massachusetts under the ROE Act, PPAF’s legislative priorities focus on making abortion care more accessible and affordable statewide, protecting patients and providers that seek or deliver care that is legal in Massachusetts, expanding access to birth control and comprehensive sex education across the state, and combating systemic health inequities especially for BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities.

The Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts endorses Maura Healey for Governor:

“Maura Healey has been a steadfast partner and courageous advocate for reproductive freedom and health equity as Attorney General and throughout her legal career, including championing the ROE Act, challenging federal attacks on abortion and birth control access, and leading in the fight for marriage equality. As politicians threaten these fundamental rights in other states, the people of Massachusetts can count on Maura to not only protect their rights but ensure Massachusetts remains a beacon for reproductive freedom and a safe place to access care," said Dr. Nate Horwitz-Willis, Executive Director of PPAF.

"With Roe overturned, it is essential that Massachusetts continue to be a leader on reproductive freedom. The heroic staff and providers of Planned Parenthood play a critical role in making this possible," said Maura Healey. "I'm honored to have the endorsement of the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts, and I'm committed to partnering with them to ensure that Massachusetts remains a beacon of hope for anyone seeking care."

The Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts endorses Kim Driscoll for Lieutenant Governor:

“Kim Driscoll is a proven leader with a distinct record of furthering sexual and reproductive health equity, including implementing comprehensive sex education in Salem. With reproductive health and rights under attack nationwide, we are inspired by Kim’s strategic vision and experience for how to equitably expand access to abortion and other sexual and reproductive health care in cities and towns across our state. We are proud to endorse her for Lt. Governor,” said Dr. Nate Horwitz-Willis, Executive Director of PPAF.

"At a time when abortion rights have been stripped away by far right justices, the essential battle for our most fundamental rights is now within states. I am proud to have earned the endorsement of the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts. As Lieutenant Governor, I will build on my partnership with Planned Parenthood and its allies to fight for affordable, accessible abortion and health care for all at every level of government. Abortion care is healthcare and this fight is not over,” said Kim Driscoll, Mayor of Salem and Candidate for Lt. Governor.

The Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts endorses Andrea Campbell for Attorney General:

“Andrea Campbell has been a champion for reproductive freedom, always centering the voices and experiences of people most impacted by restrictive and discriminatory policies because she’s lived it. Andrea's deep understanding of the barriers many Planned Parenthood patients face in accessing care and the systemic inequities that must be addressed to build healthy communities set her apart in this race and we are proud to endorse her for Attorney General,” said Dr. Nate Horwitz-Willis, Executive Director of PPAF.

“I’m honored to have earned the endorsement of the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund. Now is not the time to sit back; it’s time to double down on our efforts to protect the right to choose and expand access to reproductive health care,” said Andrea Campbell. “Together, we can ensure Massachusetts continues to be a leader. As your next Attorney General, I will use the full power of this office, working with organizations like PPAF, to ensure abortion remains legal and accessible in Massachusetts, protect our providers, intentionally engage marginalized communities and address health care disparities in communities of color, low-income and rural communities.”

To earn PPAF’s endorsement, candidates must fill-out a questionnaire that evaluates their support for PPAF’s legislative priorities, and win a two-thirds vote from the PPAF Board. PPAF is a non-partisan organization and invited all Democratic and Republican candidates for Governor, Lt. Governor, and Attorney General to participate in the endorsement process; no Republican candidates responded to the questionnaire.
