BOSTON — Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts (PPLM) announced today that it has hired Dominique Lee as the organization’s new President and CEO. An expert health care leader and innovative public health strategist, Lee has dedicated her career to expanding access to quality, compassionate, culturally sensitive health care at Planned Parenthood and advocating for health equity and social justice through public health and policy initiatives. Lee will also serve as President of the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts, PPLM’s advocacy and political arm.

Dominique Lee’s appointment as President and CEO of PPLM is a full circle moment for Lee and a historic one for PPLM. Lee started her career nearly twenty years ago at PPLM as a health care assistant and patient services manager, launching a 17-year journey with Planned Parenthood that spanned four affiliates in both red and blue states and urban and rural environments. Of Indigenous and Chinese descent, Lee is the first person of color to lead PPLM as President and CEO.

“Returning to Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts to lead the organization that cultivated my career-long dedication to advancing health equity and reproductive freedom is humbling and exciting. PPLM is already celebrated for its exceptional health care and education, groundbreaking research, and steadfast advocacy. This post-Roe moment demands that protective states do everything they can to equitably expand access to abortion and other sexual and reproductive health care, and PPLM is answering that call by enhancing our health care delivery, expanding sex education, researching the impacts of abortion restrictions, training reproductive health care professionals, and nurturing staff at every level of our organization to sustain our movement,” said Dominique Lee, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts. “For me, Planned Parenthood is synonymous with empowerment, purpose, and joy. It is my goal that every person who walks through our doors – whether they’re a patient or a staff member – feels the embrace of an organization that respects, uplifts, and cares for them, no matter what.”

Prior to this role, Lee spent 15 years leading health center operations and managing patient services at multiple Planned Parenthood affiliates, culminating as chief operating officer at the largest affiliate, Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, where she oversaw operations and delivery of care across 35 health centers serving over 250,000 patients annually in California and Nevada. Most recently, Lee helped spearhead the health domain at IDEO, a renowned global design consultancy celebrated for its pioneering approach to human-centered design, where she collaborated with health organizations to amplify health equity, foster social impact, and optimize strategy, operations, and revenue streams.

“Choosing a leader whose values and experience aligned with our mission to provide sexual and reproductive care to all, no matter what, was paramount. Identifying a leader with a deep grasp of health care operations ensures that PPLM will continue delivering exceptional care to patients as we pursue strategies to equitably broaden patient access in a post-Roe world. Dominique’s vast experience in overhauling health care systems, tapping into innovative technologies, and building trust at community and institutional levels aligns seamlessly with PPLM's mission,” said Wanda McClain, Chair of PPLM's Board of Directors. “With deep roots in Planned Parenthood and health equity, Dominique is uniquely prepared to lead PPLM in this moment.”

Lee officially started her role on September 18, 2023.

With four health centers located in Boston, Worcester, Springfield, and Marlborough and a statewide telehealth program, PPLM is the leading provider of sexual and reproductive health care in Massachusetts, serving over 40,000 patients annually.

Abortion remains legal in Massachusetts, with lawmakers passing a reproductive health care law in July of 2022, just one month after the Dobbs decision, to strengthen provisions of the ROE Act, shield providers of abortion and gender-affirming care from hostile legal action, mandate insurance providers cover abortion, and expand access to medication abortion and emergency contraception. Since then, PPLM has...

  • partnered with state leaders, organizations, and public universities to expand medication abortion access;
  • secured funding from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health for a pilot program to train advanced practice clinicians in abortion and other reproductive health care;
  • launched the ASPIRE Center for Sexual and Reproductive Health to bolster PPLM’s clinical and social science research, evidence-based professional education, and clinical training;
  • conducted research that shows patients traveling to Massachusetts for abortion increased by 37% in just the first four months after the Dobbs decision; and
  • been at the forefront of the push to update Massachusetts’ health education framework to include comprehensive sex education.
