New York will continue to serve as an Abortion Access State for the rest of the country;

Planned Parenthood of Greater New York Action Fund continues to fight to ensure equitable access to life-saving abortion services;

NEW YORK - Today, The Supreme Court ended our federal constitutional right to abortion and overturned Roe v. Wade — turning its back on nearly 50 years of precedent. This dangerous and cruel decision opens the floodgates by allowing states across the country to ban abortion.

Up to 26 states are poised to flip the switch on abortion rights, making this life-saving health care out of reach for people who already struggle financially to access affordable health services. This is in defiance of the will of 80% of Americans who want abortion to remain a constitutional right.

Thanks to New York’s Reproductive Health Act of 2019, New York will continue to serve as an Abortion Access State for all New Yorkers and the rest of the country. But our fight is far from over. Amid the growing threat to our fundamental freedoms, PPGNY Action Fund is determined to hold our elected champions accountable for enhancing equitable access to health care. That means making our voices and votes heard this election season. New York voters must stand firm in their commitment to elect pro-reproductive rights champions, at all levels of government, who will boldly fight for reproductive health care, rights, and justice.

Abortion access is inextricably linked to the full range of issues that affect the lives of people who are directly impacted by bans - Black, Latinx, and Indigenous people, families with low incomes, young people, people with disabilities, people who live in health care deserts, and all those with identities pushed to the margins of society due to this country’s legacy of racism and discrimination.

Statement by Joy D. Calloway, Interim President & CEO, Planned Parenthood of Greater New York Action Fund:

This is personal. The U.S. Supreme Court has robbed millions of people of their right to control their bodies and personal health care decisions. This cruel decision provokes a dangerous health crisis. People will be forced to overcome unjust barriers to access abortion or carry pregnancies against their will — at the risk of their health and lives.

This is a profoundly dismal day for our country, but the fight is far from over. Abortion justice demands that we fiercely fight to ensure equitable access to the full spectrum of sexual and reproductive health care – and abortion is health care. Planned Parenthood of Greater New York Action Fund, alongside our reproductive health care, rights, and justice champions, won’t back down until every New Yorker and people across the country are empowered with the resources and information, they need to determine their own futures. We will not compromise on our bodies, our dignity, or our freedom. We have strength in numbers and power in our united voices.

Even with today’s Supreme Court decision, abortion is still legal in many parts of the country, including the great state of New York.
