NEW YORK -- PPGNY Action Fund Vice President of Public Affairs Pascale Bernard issued the following statement on Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death:
Our hearts are broken for our Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s loved ones, and for our state, our country, our court, and our communities. Born in Brooklyn, Justice Ginsburg’s life, spirit, and values epitomized New York and what we stand for.
Justice Ginsburg committed her entire life to fighting for freedom for people of all genders. Her achievements are endless — she harnessed courage and resolve to strategically break down America’s sexist, unethical laws and institutions. Her powerful words over the years, perhaps especially in those moments when she spoke in dissent, have helped push our laws and our nation toward a more perfect union.
When Ruth Bader Ginsburg saw something repugnant — like systemic discrimination — she got straight to work. And that’s what we all must do now to honor her legacy and preserve the ideals she spent her life’s work defending.
The fate of our country, our freedoms, our health care, and our lives depend on what happens over the coming months. In Justice Ginsburg’s own words, ‘My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed.’
In honor of Justice Ginsburg’s legacy and equality for everyone, we cannot let Trump and Mitch McConnell replace her with someone who would undo her work and take away the rights and freedoms she fought so hard for. Doing this would be a slap in the face to the millions of Americans who honor and cherish Justice Ginsburg’s legacy.
It is not an exaggeration to say that our patients’ and our communities’ lives and rights would be in jeopardy if Trump was able to confirm another nominee to the highest court in the nation.
For our patients and communities, we vow to honor the legacy of Justice Ginsburg and approach the coming months like our lives and futures depend on it — because they do.
