As attacks on legal abortions increase, New York voters must elect leaders who will defend our right to bodily autonomy and advance equitable access to sexual and reproductive health care.
New York - Planned Parenthood of Greater New York Votes PAC is eager to announce its list of endorsements for the 2023 New York City Council elections. This will be the first New York City Council race after the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, dismantling the federal right to abortion and allowing politicians to ban abortion in more than 18 states nationwide.
Now more than ever, it is imperative that New Yorkers elect a strong City Council who will unapologetically defend our right to bodily autonomy. PPGNY Votes PAC proudly endorses City Council candidates who align with our mission to dismantle systems that uphold racial inequity and ensure all people – regardless of race, income, age, gender/gender identity, sexual orientation, or marital status – have access to the sexual and reproductive health care services they need.
Some of these candidates include:
Tiffany Caban who led the effort to codify into a law a resolution declaring NYC a safe city for all in need of abortion care and prohibit city agencies from cooperating with the detention of people who perform or aid in abortion related services; Crystal Hudson who was the lead sponsor of a bill that addressed the Black maternal mortality crisis by implementing an outreach and education campaign on the benefits and services provided by doulas and midwives to promote visibility and awareness; Carlina Rivera who was the lead sponsor of the bill to provide zero-cost FDA-approved medicine for medication abortions and has been an avid supporter of other reproductive health care access issues, and Farah Louis whose bill increases education about the impact of polycystic ovary syndrome and endometriosis and will help people seeking sexual and reproductive care.
Statement by Dipal Shah, Executive Director, Planned Parenthood of Greater New York Votes PAC:
With anti-abortion politicians unceasingly attempting to ban abortion access nationwide, it is crucial that we elect a City Council that will furiously defend and protect our right to safe and legal abortions. The candidates on this list are at the forefront of what local politics can do for the sexual and reproductive health movement. We proudly endorsed them because they have done the work at the local level to introduce and pass bills that halt attempts to stall health care equity, and that aggressively protect, advance, and expand access to sexual and reproductive health care and abortion services. New Yorkers deserve and want fierce leaders in their corner – and they are those leaders.
PPGNY Votes PAC believes that everyone – including those coming from states that have restricted abortion access – has the fundamental right to decide when and whether to have a child. This list of endorsements will further cement New York as a leader in abortion access and continue to advance protections not only for New York’s marginalized communities, but for anyone coming to the state looking for abortion care.
