The Legislature has passed an unnecessary bill that interferes with the patient-doctor relationship, while refusing to advance a bill to improve birth control coverage for Minnesotans.
St. Paul, MN – May 10, 2018, the Minnesota House passed HF 3194 / SF 2849, which requires health care providers to offer patients the option of viewing an ultrasound prior to an abortion. This comes on the heels of the Minnesota Senate passing an identical bill on May 1, 2018. The bill now heads for the Governor’s desk. Governor Dayton has publicly expressed his opposition to the bill.
The following is a statement from Sarah Stoesz, President of the Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota Action Fund.
“From day one, the Planned Parenthood Action Fund has opposed this legislation. It is completely unnecessary since patients already have the option to view an ultrasound prior to an abortion. It is also based on a fundamental distrust of patients to make thoughtful, informed medical decisions, and a distrust of doctors to provide patients with complete, appropriate information. Patients deserve their physicians’ best medical judgment and counsel, not unnecessary mandates dictated by politicians.”
“While the Minnesota House and Senate have focused on this needless legislation, the Trump Administration is threatening to take away birth control from people in our state and across the country. Nearly nine in 10 women will use contraception at some point in their lives. Yet Republican leadership in Minnesota has refused to focus on the Protect Access to Contraception (PAC) Act to defend the right to no-cost birth control in our state – and wouldn’t even give it a hearing.”
“The legislature should focus on priorities that improve our state’s health, like making sure Minnesotans have affordable contraception, not on bills that undermine the patient-doctor relationship.”
