Supreme Court appears poised to overturn Roe v. Wade in leaked draft opinion

Las Vegas, NV — Yesterday evening a draft of the majority opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which stated the intent to overturn Roe v. Wade, was leaked to Politico. In it, Justice Samuel Alito writes “Roe was egregiously wrong from the start” and “we hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled.”

Though the decision is not yet final and abortion remains legal, if this decision issues, 26 states are poised to move quickly to ban abortion, leaving more than 36 million women of reproductive age — and other people who can become pregnant —  without abortion access.

Statement from Lindsey Harmon, Executive Director, Planned Parenthood Votes Nevada:

“The gravity of this leak cannot be overstated; however, at this time it is important to remember that abortion remains legal in the United States. And that, regardless of what the Supreme Court’s final ruling is in the case, abortion rights are protected in Nevada by state statute.

“That said, this is a galvanizing moment for the abortion rights movement in our state and across the country. This leak has made it clear that the threat to abortion access across the country is not hypothetical. Planned Parenthood Votes Nevada, our partners, and our supporters are fighting together to ensure that the right to abortion care remains protected in our state and that everyone has the power to control their own bodies, lives, and futures. Full stop.”
