As more than 22 million Americans file for unemployment and more than half a million test positive for COVID-19, Collins still won’t stand up to Trump on behalf of Maine’s families

Washington, DC — More than 22 million Americans have filed for unemployment and more than half a million have tested positive for COVID-19 as the pandemic gets more serious every day — but you wouldn't know it from listening to Susan Collins. She just can't decide whether she should praise Trump's tragically mismanaged COVID-19 response for doing "a lot that was right in the beginning," or if it was actually "very uneven."

This week in an interview with POLITICO, Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) "chide[d]" Trump's coronavirus pandemic response as "very uneven,” saying "it’s been mixed." The comments fell short of a serious criticism of the Trump administration's handling of the pandemic, despite broad consensus that Trump knew about the pandemic early, but refused to act and repeatedly downplayed the threat of coronavirus. And as recently as last week, Collins praised Trump for doing "a lot that was right in the beginning."

As we’ve seen time and again from Collins, she won't stand up to Trump when it matters, and her support in the state is hitting new lows: A poll this week shows Collins is 15 points underwater with her constituents. The stakes are too high for elected officials to ignore the gravity of the crisis and waste time playing politics. Mainers deserve a real leader like Sara Gideon who will fight for families during these trying, unprecedented times — not a senator who refuses to do more than lightly chide the president for actions that have had catastrophic consequences in Maine and across the country. POLITICO: Susan Collins chides Trump for ‘very uneven’ performance on coronavirus
By Burgess Everett
April 14, 2020

  • "Susan Collins hasn’t decided whether to endorse or oppose President Donald Trump’s reelection bid. But she has reached a conclusion on his public performance during the coronavirus pandemic: 'Very uneven.'"
  • "Collins said she’s watched many of Trump’s coronavirus task force briefings but has missed them this week because of her own work. Trump battled with several reporters during Monday’s two-hour saga, declared that his authority overrides those of state governors and on Tuesday berated New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) and other Democratic executives on Twitter."
  • "'It’s been uneven. I don’t think that that is helpful. I think when he stays on message it's helpful [...],' Collins said."

Bangor Daily News: Poll: Mainers trust state government more than feds on coronavirus response
By Jessica Piper
April 13, 2020

  • "The poll showed a further drop in approval for Republican Sen. Susan Collins since last fall, from 42 percent to 37 percent, while the share of voters who disapproved of her performance climbed to 52 percent, though her approval rating with Republican voters continued to rise."
