Washington, DC — Sen. Martha McSally (R-AZ) has been quick to side with Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell over Arizonans — even defending Trump's devastatingly mismanaged COVID-19 response. A new op-ed in The Arizona Republic calls out McSally for supporting McConnell's suggestion that states declare bankruptcy, rather than getting additional federal funding for COVID-19 relief. Earlier this week, POLITICO highlighted McSally's claim that Trump has been "cheerleading for Americans and Arizonans" — even as the United States death toll soars past 80,000.

McSally's refusal to stand up to Trump or McConnell while the health of her constituents is in jeopardy goes hand-in-hand with her record of trying to put affordable health care further out of reach for Arizonans. Whether she's cheering to "get this f---ing thing done" before she voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act or voting to defund Planned Parenthood health centers, McSally can't be counted on to protect the health care and reproductive rights of her constituents. Arizona Republic: Is Sen. Martha McSally more beholden to Sen. Mitch McConnell than to Arizona?
By EJ Montini

  • "Sen. Martha McSally is [toeing] the line of Republican Majority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell when it comes to stiffing cities and states in the next federal bailout bill for communities devastated by the coronavirus."
  • “Not long ago McConnell said he would prefer state governments to declare bankruptcy during the pandemic than receive more federal money ... During a virtual town hall hosted by the mayor of Surprise, McSally echoed McConnell’s claim."
  • "Perhaps her zeal in this matter is philosophically based. But I can’t help but wonder if McSally’s willingness to [toe] the McConnell line might have something to do with her needing a bailout herself, when it comes to the November election."
  • "And while McConnell isn’t willing to help local governments, he seems perfectly happy to bail out McSally. And you know where she stands."
