Tonight, the North Carolina Governor's debate will showcase why Governor Roy Cooper is the only candidate in this race who will prioritize the health and safety of North Carolinians. Whether it’s holding the line against attacks on safe, legal abortion access from legislators hostile to reproductive rights, fighting for Medicaid expansion, or advocating for affordable birth control, Gov. Cooper has been a steadfast champion for North Carolinians’ health care.

Gov. Cooper’s record is a stark contrast to Dan Forest’s dangerous health agenda. Forest is an extreme and divisive politician who is completely out of touch with the lives and values of North Carolinians. If he had his way, abortion would be outlawed and people could be denied health care coverage because of a pre-existing condition.

Here’s what you need to know ahead of tonight’s debate:

Dan Forest:

  • Forest applauded efforts to deny critical funding to Planned Parenthood health centers, which could jeopardize reproductive health care and cancer screenings services for North Carolinians with nowhere else to turn.
  • Forest thinks the Affordable Care Act, the health care law that protects coverage for the 1 in 4 North Carolinians with pre-existing conditions, should be repealed. The impact of overturning the ACA would be especially devastating now, during the Trump administration's failed response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Forest has supported burdensome restrictions to abortion access. He previously said that a 72-hour delay - a delay that may put abortion care out of reach for someone who is seeking an abortion - was “not that controversial.”

North Carolina can count on Gov. Roy Cooper because he has a proven record:

  • Gov. Cooper vetoed overly burdensome abortion restrictions and called out fear-mongering misinformation from Republican politicians.
  • Gov. Cooper opposed the Title X gag rule, which forced Planned Parenthood out of the national affordable birth control program.
  • Despite opposition from some politicians, Gov. Cooper has fought to expand Medicaid, which could provide health care and long-term care for 500,000 North Carolinians and created thousands of new jobs.
  • Gov. Cooper spoke out against a lawsuit attacking the ACA, helping protect health coverage for North Carolinians with pre-existing conditions.
