N.C. Senate Debate Preview: This Budd's a Dud
For Immediate Release: Oct. 7, 2022
Anti-abortion zealot Ted Budd will face reproductive rights champion Cheri Beasley tonight at 8 p.m. EST
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Ahead of tonight’s U.S. Senate debate, Planned Parenthood Votes is reminding North Carolinians of candidate Ted Budd’s abysmal and dangerous record on abortion rights. No matter how Budd tries to deflect or distract on the debate stage tonight, voters will not forget that he:
- Co-sponsored a nationwide abortion ban just last month
- Opposes exceptions to abortion bans for victims of rape and incest or to save the life of the pregnant person
- Co-sponsored a nationwide six-week abortion ban in 2017
- Co-sponsored a federal TRAP law to create arbitrary barriers to accessing abortion
- Co-sponsored legislation to require medically unnecessary ultrasounds before abortions
- Voted against the Women’s Health Protection Act and called it “disgusting”
Statement from Emily Thompson, spokesperson for Planned Parenthood Votes in North Carolina:
“The stakes in North Carolina’s Senate race couldn’t be higher, and the choice couldn’t be clearer: A Senator Cheri Beasley will be a critical vote to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act and restore federal protections for abortion, while a Sen. Ted Budd would be a living nightmare and could be the deciding vote to ban abortion in all 50 states. North Carolinians deserve a leader like Cheri Beasley who will fight for their rights, not try to take them away. This November, voters will resoundingly reject Ted Budd and everything he stands for.”
Yesterday, Planned Parenthood Votes and Planned Parenthood Action PAC North Carolina announced a historic $5 million electoral program in the Tar Heel State to elect reproductive rights champions up and down the ballot.
Next Friday, October 14 is the deadline to register to vote in North Carolina. Absentee voting began on September 9; early voting begins October 20 and runs through November 5; and Tuesday, November 8 is Election Day.
