Planned Parenthood Votes Statement On Mike Pence Presidential Run
For Immediate Release: June 7, 2023
WASHINGTON — Today, Mike Pence announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for president of the United States. Jenny Lawson, executive director of Planned Parenthood Votes, issued the following statement:
“A Mike Pence presidency would be a nightmare for the millions of Americans who support abortion rights and want to keep politicians out of their doctor’s office. While other contenders are dodging questions on abortion and trying to hide their agendas, Pence is boastfully and unapologetically leaning into his radical platform: anti-abortion and anti all things reproductive health and rights. From his time as Indiana governor, to his obsession with ‘defunding" Planned Parenthood as a congressman and vice president, he is a direct threat to public health in this country. Pence would do everything in his power as president to ban abortion nationwide and criminalize providers. Planned Parenthood Votes will not let that happen.”
More on Mike Pence’s anti-abortion record:
- Pence wants a nationwide abortion ban and supports Senator Graham’s 15-week ban.
- Pence said he “couldn’t be more proud than to be part of the most pro-life administration in American history.”
- In a leaked audio, Pence said “we need to” ban abortion pills and he’d like to see mifepristone taken off the market.
- Pence celebrated the overturning of Roe v. Wade, saying it belonged in “the ash heap of history.”
- Pence has long led the crusade to defund Planned Parenthood, even saying that as long as Planned Parenthood provided abortions, he would “be after them.”
- As vice president, Pence cast the tie-breaking vote to allow states to "defund" Planned Parenthood.
- Pence was the first sitting vice president to visit a crisis pregnancy center.
- As governor of Indiana, Pence signed a stigmatizing “reason” abortion ban.
