Washington, DC — The second night of the Republican National Convention speakers will feature more of the same dangerous tactics: disinformation, fearmongering, and stigmatization on sexual and reproductive health. We’ll hear from speakers who want to ban abortion, overturn Roe v Wade, and pass and implement even more draconian laws that restrict access to reproductive health care services, and target the communities who most need these services, including trans people and women of color. Like many Republicans, one of their speakers, a paid anti-abortion activist, even opposes access to contraception, saying “a woman’s fertility is a sign of health and should not be ‘broken’ by dangerous hormonal methods.”

The RNC will continue to traffic in lies and divisive rhetoric, so here are the facts that you need to know about tonight’s speakers:

Statement from Jenny Lawson, executive director, Planned Parenthood Votes:

“Last night’s RNC featured all of the lies, fear tactics, and out-of-touch views we expected - tonight will be no different. The speakers will attempt to stoke fear and division while spreading misinformation about sexual and reproductive health care services and rights. Speakers like Mike Pompeo, Sen. Rand Paul, Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez, and Abby Johnson cannot be trusted to tell the truth about safe, legal abortion--or their own records attacking people’s rights and health care. While Republicans will continue to lie and stigmatize sexual and reproductive health care services, Planned Parenthood Votes will continue to shine a light on President Trump’s and Vice President Pence’s unconscionable health care record and fight to protect access to reproductive health and rights at the ballot box.”

Mike Pompeo

  • Pompeo wants to ban abortion, with no exceptions for victims of rape or incest.

  • Pompeo expanded and implemented the Trump administration’s “global gag rule.” He’s also supporting the withholding of funds to the United Nations Population Fund, the leading provider of contraception around the globe.

  • In Congress, Pompeo voted repeatedly to restrict access to safe and legal abortion. He also voted nine times to block access to Planned Parenthood health centers.

  • Pompeo joined his most extreme colleagues in Congress to sponsor so-called “personhood” legislation, which would fully outlaw abortion and some forms of contraception.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY)

  • Paul has voted seven times todefundPlanned Parenthood health centers, blocking access to health care for more than 6,500 Kentuckians who receive care -- like STI testing, cancer screenings, and birth control -- from Planned Parenthood health centers every year.

  • Paul joined his most extreme colleagues and urged the Supreme Court to “reconsider” Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision which established a national right to safe and legal abortion.

  • Paul voted multiple times to repeal the Affordable Care Act, putting health coverage at risk, including protections for more than 1.7 million Kentuckians with pre-existing conditions -- like asthma, cancer, or diabetes.

Gov. Kim Reynolds

  • Reynolds signed a six-week abortion ban bill into law, banning abortion before most people know they are pregnant.

  • Last year, Reynolds signed a budget cutting off federal funding for sex education programs offered by Planned Parenthood.

  • Earlier this year, Reynolds signed another abortion restriction requiring a medically unnecessary waiting period before an abortion. The law targets Iowans with low incomes who have to take extra time off work or school or arrange and pay for extra child care, on top of driving hours, to get access to health care.

  • Reynolds tried to block patients from obtaining time-sensitive, essential surgical abortions during the COVID-19 pandemic, interfering in personal medical decisions that should be left to patients and doctors.

  • Reynolds campaigned to add an anti-abortion amendment to the Iowa state constitution, which could make it harder for Iowans to obtain safe and legal abortions.

Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez

  • In the state House, Nuñez voted for multiple bills to restrict access to safe and legal abortion. She also voted against expanding Medicaid to more than 800,000 Floridians with low incomes.

  • The DeSantis-Nuñez administration approved a burdensome restriction on young people who want to access safe and legal abortion.

Kentucky AG Daniel Cameron

  • Cameron tried to block patients from obtaining surgical abortions during the COVID-19 pandemic, falsely claiming abortion is not a time-sensitive, necessary procedure. Cameron even tried to orchestrate a power grab to try and usurp the governor’s power to block access to safe and legal abortions.

  • Cameron supports overturning the Affordable Care Act, putting health coverage at risk, including protections for more than 1.7 million Kentuckians with pre-existing conditions -- like asthma, cancer, or diabetes.

Abby Johnson

  • Johnson urged so-called “crisis pregnancy centers,” health centers that actively discourage pregnant people from getting abortions through disinformation and deceit,  to “look professional,” adding, “the best client you ever get is one that thinks they’re walking into an abortion clinic.”

  • Following her “conversion” from a provider at a Planned Parenthood health center  to anti-abortion activist, Johnson headlined a speaking tour titled “Do Women Have Too Many Rights?”

  • Johnson has made a career of promoting absurdly false claims about abortion and Planned Parenthood, even alleging that health care providers perform abortions on people who aren’t actually pregnant.

  • Johnson even opposes access to contraception, saying “a woman’s fertility is a sign of health and should not be ‘broken’ by dangerous hormonal methods.”
