Don’t be fooled by her performative votes — when it counts she always sides with Trump and her party

Portland, ME — Maine voters see clearly through Susan Collins’ attempts to hide her record supporting the Trump administration when her vote is needed.  Although Mitch McConnell didn’t need her vote today, Mainers haven’t forgotten that she has already voted to confirm Barrett for a lifetime appointment as a federal judge on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals and voted last week on the Senate floor against an attempt to block Barrett’s nomination to the Supreme Court.

Though Judge Barrett’s hostility to both abortion rights and the Affordable Care Act were well known when Collins voted for her in 2017, now, in the middle of a close election, Collins says she will vote against Judge Barrett. Notably, she was careful to make this statement after Mitch McConnell secured the necessary votes to confirm Donald Trump’s nominee to Justice Ginsburg’s seat.

Statement from Amy Cookson, Planned Parenthood Votes spokesperson in Maine:

“When all eyes are on her and her vote isn’t needed, we can always count on Susan Collins to try to discount or hide her record as a rubber stamp for Trump’s judicial nominees. This is exactly what she did today when she took a politically calculated vote. But Mainers see through her stunts and know that when it counts, Susan Collins will always side with her party and her corporate donors, not us. She’s voted for more than 180 of Trump’s judicial nominees - including Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh, and other judges who have records hostile to safe, legal abortion. Health care is on the ballot this year and it’s clear we cannot count on Susan Collins to protect our health and rights. That’s why Mainers are already coming out in record numbers to elect Sara Gideon, a health care champion we can trust to fight for us.”

Collins has voted for 95% of Trump’s judicial nominees, many with records hostile to sexual and reproductive rights, including Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett.
