PP Votes kicks off largest-ever national electoral program in earnest, aims to mobilize thousands of supporters across the state in support of champions for reproductive health

Harrisburg, PA  Today, Planned Parenthood Votes announced the upcoming launch of its electoral program in Pennsylvania as part of “We Decide 2020,” the people-powered electoral program to elect champions for reproductive rights. From making sure that Pennsylvania’s electoral votes go to Scranton-native Vice President Joe Biden, to sending reproductive rights champions to Congress, Planned Parenthood Votes will serve as a significant force in this 2020 election cycle.

From now until election day, Planned Parenthood Votes will be mobilizing supporters to connect with more than 65,000 voters across the state. The $1.25 million dollar program will support Planned Parenthood Action Fund-endorsed federal candidates like Vice President Joe Biden, Christina Finello (CD 1) and Eugene DePasquale (CD 10) and other reproductive health champions like State Attorney General Josh Shapiro, through a voter contact and relational organizing program, paid digital advertising, and a robust direct mail program. It is critical that we elect a president like Joe Biden, who has pledged to repeal the Trump administration’s discriminatory Title X gag rule, blocking funding for reproductive health care clinics in Pennsylvania. In addition, Planned Parenthood Votes and Planned Parenthood Pennsylvania Advocates will be working to flip the state legislative seats toward a reproductive rights majority.

Statement from Emily Callen, spokesperson, Planned Parenthood Votes:

“Pennsylvanians know what’s at stake for reproductive health care. For years, we’ve watched anti-abortion politicians like Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick and Scott Perry vote to defund Planned Parenthood and attack abortion access, affordable birth control, and so much more. The stakes for our health and livelihoods have never been higher —we can’t afford another four years of Trump working with representatives like Perry and Fitzpatrick to turn back the clock. That’s why Planned Parenthood Votes is organizing in every corner of the state to elect Scranton native Joe Biden, an experienced leader who will expand access to health care and reproductive rights, and always put people first. We’ve fought back every step of the way  and this November, we’re taking that fight to the ballot box."

As the country grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic and an administration that refuses to take science-backed action to protect our health, Planned Parenthood Votes will be running an innovative organizing program in Pennsylvania, with an emphasis on outreach that keeps volunteers and voters safe. Over the coming months, the robust voter contact program will invest seven figures in order to organize online, and encourage supporters to use relational organizing to talk to their family and neighbors about what’s at stake for Pennsylvania this November.  It will also help voters who are concerned about this administration’s attacks on reproductive health cast their ballots by mail.

The program will kick off with a virtual launch event to welcome supporters on Thursday, July 30th. The launch will brief supporters on our path to victory, feature leaders underscoring the stakes for reproductive health and rights in this election, and have volunteers speaking to what motivates them to take action. With just over three months left before the November 3rd election, volunteers will begin outreach to voters about the importance of voting and expanding access to reproductive health care for all.

We Decide 2020 is the largest electoral program ever for Planned Parenthood advocacy and political organizations, with a historic investment of at least $45 million in key battleground states. Voters want champions for reproductive health — including the right to access a safe and legal abortion — in public office, according to polls. Support for abortion access is at an all-time high, and there is no state in the nation where banning abortion is popular. In both the 2018 and 2019 elections, voters overwhelmingly elected reproductive health champions, and soundly rejected the attacks from politicians who oppose abortion. The stakes for reproductive rights in Pennsylvania could not be higher. From now until Election Day, Planned Parenthood Votes will be working to ensure Pennsylvanians turn out in force at the ballot box to support reproductive rights champions.

State Attorney General Josh Shapiro

  • When the Trump Administration sued to allow employers to cut off your access to birth control, AG Shapiro took them to the Supreme Court to stop them.
  • AG Shapiro knows that abortion is health care and has protected this right for Pennsylvanians in the courts.
  • While in office, Shapiro joined a lawsuit to counter the Trump administration's Title X abortion gag rule that has blocked access to reproductive care.

Christina Finello (D-PA)

  • Unlike Representative Brian Fitzpatrick, Christina Finello knows that abortion is a “very personal issue” and in Congress, she will make sure that “each woman has the right to make those decisions without interference.”
  • Finello pledged to “fight back against Republican efforts to defund critical healthcare organizations like Planned Parenthood” when she’s in Congress.
  • Finello supports the progress made under the Affordable Care Act and will fight to help the more than 5 million Pennsylvanians with pre-existing conditions keep their insurance coverage.
  • Finello opposes the Trump-Pence administration’s attacks on sexual and reproductive health and rights. In Congress, she will “support legislation to increase access to contraception and ... oppose efforts to defund organizations that provide critical healthcare options to women.”

Eugene DePasquale (D-PA)

  • DePasquale opposes attacks on abortion access and in Congress, he “will remain dedicated to protecting sexual and reproductive health and rights.” This is a welcome departure from CD-10’s current Representative Scott Perry, who has voted eight times to “defund” Planned Parenthoodputting reproductive health care at risk for people in Pennsylvania who rely on Planned Parenthood for care, including STI testing, birth control, and more.
  • As auditor general, DePasquale held “crisis pregnancy centers,” which regularly misinform women about abortion and contraception, accountable to Pennsylvania taxpayers.
  • DePasquale knows “it is not a politician’s place to put themselves between an individual and their doctor.”
