My name is BreAnna Bemboom and I am an organizer in Minnesota—where we face the largest ballot our state has seen in four decades. Both United States senators from Minnesota are up for re-election, the governorship is on the ballot, and there are several competitive U.S. House races on the line.
This year, Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota Action Fund is jumping all-in to run our largest election program EVER in Minnesota.
If you want to know what American voters care about the most—just follow me and my volunteers on a canvass. People are FED UP with the relentless attacks on access to health care and they’re frustrated over the continued fight to ensure women can access safe, legal abortion. The protests that erupted yesterday during the SCOTUS confirmation hearings were no coincidence—it echoes the anger and quite frankly, the fight-back attitude we hear everyday in our communities.
Just two weeks ago, a woman answered her door with her young daughter standing next to her. She told me stories about her mother marching in the streets and fighting to legalize abortion. She shared her concerns for the future of the Supreme Court and Roe v. Wade, and is fearful her young daughter could grow up with less freedoms and rights than she and her mother once had. And that woman is not alone. I hear it in neighborhoods all across Minnesota—rich and poor; Black, Latinx, and white—they want to see change and they want to be part of the solution.
For me, our volunteers, and for millions of Americans watching the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings from home, it is so much more than politics. Our health care is on the line, our freedoms are at risk, our rights are being threatened—and we aren’t going to sit by and let it happen.
I’ve met more first-time volunteers this year than ever before and more first-time voters are pledging to turnout in a midterm election.
"The groundswell of energy and activism is real—and to politicians who have made a career out of attacking our rights, we are saying to you—the American people are coming for you and they will vote you out of office."
That’s why our ground game is a vital piece to winning back our power in November. Planned Parenthood Action Fund is committed to helping Minnesotans connect the dots between their votes at the ballot box and the attacks waged against them everyday. One conversation at a time, we will change the face of power.
We will knock on doors, dial countless calls, and rally in record numbers to ensure we empower as many people as possible to turnout this November to demand their voices be heard.
