Planned Parenthood Action Fund Endorses U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich for Re-election in New Mexico
Albuquerque, NM – Today, Planned Parenthood Action Fund announced its endorsement of U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-NM) for re-election to the U.S. Senate. Sen. Heinrich is a consistent supporter of women and reproductive health and rights. Heinrich is a defendant of women’s access to affordable birth control, and he strongly opposed the Trump-Pence administration’s attempts to block patients from Planned Parenthood health centers.
Sen. Heinrich opposes extreme Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who would swing the court’s balance away from our constitutional rights, including the right to safe, legal abortion. In re-electing Martin Heinrich, New Mexicans can be certain he will continue fighting against attempts to take away access to reproductive health care and women’s rights.
Statement from Dawn Laguens, Executive Vice President, Planned Parenthood Action Fund:
“It is crucial to have champions in the Senate defending the right to health care, and Sen. Martin Heinrich is one of the most steadfast champions we have. Planned Parenthood Action Fund is thrilled to again endorse Sen. Heinrich. His re-election will ensure that women, men, and families of New Mexico have a clear voice in the Senate protecting health care and rights.
“As the Trump-Pence administration continuously attacks the rights of all people to access reproductive health care, Sen. Heinrich stands strong against restrictions on our nation’s program for affordable birth control, and attempts to take away access to health care, including abortion. His record is clear: Heinrich is for health care and for New Mexicans. Now, it’s time for the Land of Enchantment to send him back to the Senate.”
Statement from Vicki Cowart, President and CEO, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains Action Fund:
“Martin Heinrich has been a strong supporter of expanding access to reproductive health care, including abortion, since his time on the Albuquerque City Council. We are thrilled with Planned Parenthood Action Fund’s endorsement of Senator Heinrich for re-election in New Mexico. Senator Heinrich has reliably opposed efforts to undermine women's access to health care, including opposing Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court. And we can count on him to continue fighting for the more than 12,000 patients who rely on Planned Parenthood health centers for health care in New Mexico.”
Statement from U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich:
"Women should be trusted to make their own health care decisions without the government getting between them and their medical providers. I deeply appreciate Planned Parenthood Action Fund's endorsement, and look forward to continuing our work together to ensure women have access to the care they need."
Sen. Heinrich is a champion for all people and their access to health care. As a senator, he:
- Was an original cosponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act to block state-level attacks on abortion access.
- Called on Sen. McConnell to not bring to the floor a bill that would have overturned rules protecting Title X health centers and endangered women’s health.
- Opposed all efforts to block patients from getting care at Planned Parenthood.
- Opposed the Blunt amendment, which would have let women’s bosses decide if insurance plans cover birth control.
- Supported the Affordable Care Act’s birth control benefit, which ensures that patients will have their birth control covered by health insurance with no copay.
- Endorsed The Respect ABQ Women campaign, which opposed a ban on abortion later in pregnancy in Albuquerque.
Sen. Heinrich has a 100 percent rating from the Planned Parenthood Action Fund Congressional Scorecard, due to his consistent support of reproductive health and rights.
