2020 Candidates Showcase Plans to Protect Access to Abortion and Reproductive Rights
For Immediate Release: June 27, 2019
“This is exactly the type of leadership the American people want and deserve.” - Dr. Leana Wen
MIAMI — In response to tonight’s second Democratic debate, Planned Parenthood Action Fund released the following statement.
Statement from Dr. Leana Wen, President of Planned Parenthood Action Fund:
Over two nights in Miami, we heard from candidates about their visions to protect and expand access to reproductive health and rights. We were heartened to hear a common theme woven throughout their responses: that reproductive health care is health care and that health care is a fundamental human right. This is exactly the type of leadership the American people want and deserve. But this can't end here. Throughout this campaign, it is our expectation at Planned Parenthood Action Fund that anyone who wants to be President of our country must continue to make efforts to protect our health and rights a key part of the conversation. Together we can ensure that abortion care is treated as the health care it is, and that health care is a human right guaranteed to all.
On both nights of the debates, candidates offered strong visions of how to protect and expand reproductive health care across the country. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Sec. Julián Castro, Gov. Jay Inslee, and Sen. Amy Klobuchar led the way last night in advocating for the protection of abortion rights. In tonight’s debate, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand laid out her comprehensive platform on reproductive rights and Sen. Bernie Sanders promised to only appoint justices to the Supreme Court who would uphold Roe v. Wade.
Abortion access is a key issue for the 2020 elections, and a record-high 77 percent of Americans say they do not want to see Roe overturned. With 26 abortion bans enacted in the first few months of 2019 alone, the issue of access to abortion is more pressing and urgent than ever.
