New York, NY – Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, released the statement below following Tim Kaine voicing his opposition to repealing the Hyde Amendment, a position Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Platform are committed to.

“Hillary Clinton has consistently reiterated her resolute commitment, and that of the Democratic platform, to overturning the Hyde Amendment. Senator Kaine supports her policy efforts. Repealing Hyde would be a historic shift for low-income Americans who for too long have faced incredible financial barriers to accessing safe and legal abortion.

“We have worked closely with Senator Kaine to protect and expand access to reproductive health and rights in the Senate and will continue to work with him here. Planned Parenthood Action Fund will redouble efforts to educate Senator Kaine on the dangerous impact Hyde has on women with public insurance coverage. Supporting Hyde sends the unjust message that low-income women don’t deserve the same access, nor dignity, to make personal life choices as women with private insurance.

“While we strongly disagree with Senator Kaine on this point, there are many places where we do agree. He has been an outspoken advocate for access to reproductive health care and stands in stark contrast to Mike Pence and Donald Trump, whose nightmarish commitments include ending access to care at Planned Parenthood health centers, punishing women for having abortions, and appointing Supreme Court judges to overturn the right to safe, legal abortion.”
