Washington, DC –– Today, Donald Trump appointed Marjorie Dannenfelser, leader of the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List, to be in charge of his new anti-abortion coalition. Donald Trump has said that he believes a woman who has an abortion should be punished, and has been clear he wants to eliminate access to safe, legal abortion in this country. Earlier this week, he refused to renounce an endorsement from anti-abortion extremist Troy Newman, who has said the murder of doctors who provide abortion is “justifiable.”

Quote from Dawn Laguens, Executive Vice President, Planned Parenthood Action Fund:

“By embracing Marjorie Dannenfelser, Trump has made clear that eliminating women’s access to safe, legal abortion is a top priority. Trump already picked Mike ‘Defund Planned Parenthood’ as his running mate, and refuses to renounce the endorsement of violent anti-abortion extremists. Trump’s disdain and disrespect for women grows more obvious every day. If elected, Trump would take women back to the back-alley days when they risked their health and even their lives — and women are not going to stand for it.”

Background on Marjorie Dannenfelser

  • Dannenfelser is a staunch opponent of Planned Parenthood and has said she wants to “stop all abortion” and “shut this organization down.”

  • Dannenfelser has said her ultimate goal is to have all abortions outlawed “from conception,” without any exceptions.

  • Although the Susan B. Anthony List supported anti-abortion legislation that contained an exception for rape victims, Dannenfelser said “the rape exception is abominable.”

  • Dannenfelser doesn’t understand how contraception works. She falsely claimed that birth control and family planning “increases” the abortion rate.

  • When the Democratic Party added the repeal of the Hyde Amendment to its platform this, Dannenfelser was asked whether anti-abortion activists should “refuse to pay taxes,” and she responded, “That would be a serious consideration.”
