WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Planned Parenthood Action Fund announced its endorsement of sexual and reproductive health champions Angela Alsobrooks of Maryland and Debbie Mucarsel-Powell of Florida in their bids for Senate in 2024. When elected, these candidates will help to build upon the majority held by reproductive rights champions in the Senate.

Eighty five percent of Americans want abortion to be legal and voters have consistently made this clear in every election since the Dobbs decision. Yet, anti-abortion politicians in the Senate continue to push for a nationwide ban on abortion and levy other attacks on sexual and reproductive health care access. This November, it is critical to elect champions who will do whatever it takes to expand reproductive rights and access to abortion.

Statement from Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Action Fund:

“Our democracy is at its best when lawmakers reflect the will of the people they represent. We know that if anti-abortion politicians gain control of the Senate, they will pass a national abortion ban that majorities of Marylanders, Floridians, and Americans don’t support. That is why Planned Parenthood Action Fund trusts Debbie and Angela, and why it is crucial for us to elect them in November — these two candidates understand what’s at stake and what needs to be done to build back our rights to control our own bodies, lives and futures. Planned Parenthood Action Fund is committed to fighting to protect our rights alongside these champions, and all leaders dedicated to reproductive health, rights, and justice.”

Debbie Mucarsel-Powell will be an outspoken champion for abortion rights in the Senate. She is a vocal opponent of Florida’s 6-week abortion ban, which recently went into effect and is causing chaos and confusion for Floridians seeking abortion care. Her opponent, Senator Rick Scott, cosponsored a national abortion ban and expressed support for the state’s 6-week ban that eliminates access to reproductive care before many patients even know they are pregnant.

Angela Alsobrooks has spent her career fighting for Marylanders, and will continue that tireless fight in the Senate. She will be a voice for expanding reproductive rights and abortion access, ensuring that all Americans have the right to control their own bodies, lives, and futures. Her opponent, former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, is a major threat to reproductive freedom. Although Hogan now attempts to moderate his position on abortion rights and claims to be supportive, his record is clear. As governor, he vetoed legislation that would have expanded abortion access for Marylanders.

In addition to protecting a pro-reproductive rights majority in the Senate, electing Alsobrooks and Mucarsel-Powell will significantly expand the number of women of color in the Senate. Alsobrooks would be the first Black woman elected to the Senate from Maryland and Mucarsel-Powell would be the first Latina elected to the Senate from Florida.
