More than 500,000 #BansOffMyBody letters send a strong message: we have no time for politicians who obstruct abortion access
WASHINGTON — Today, half a million Americans will begin delivering their breakup letters to politicians in legislatures across the country. Patients, supporters, and advocates started signing a petition last summer after abortion bans swept the country, saying together, to legislators: keep your #BansOffMyBody. There is no better time than Valentine’s Day to put anti-abortion politicians on notice: it’s time to break up because when it’s over, you know.
In 2019, 25 states passed abortion bans. This year seven states are pushing anti-abortion constitutional amendments and 14 states are wasting time on inflammatory bills that do nothing to improve health care and everything to shame, stigmatize, and criminalize abortion patients and the doctors who serve them.
Statement from Jenny Lawson, Vice President Organizing and Campaigns, Planned Parenthood Action Fund:
“To politicians who are hellbent on attacking our rights: it’s not us, it’s you. With an abortion case before the Supreme Court that could open the floodgates to more harmful restrictions, we don’t have time for you. We wish you the best, just not when you’re attacking our fundamental rights and freedoms. We’re on the rebound and the only commitment we’re making is to let everyone know: keep bans off our bodies.
Nearly 80 percent of voters want to protect Roe v. Wade and there is no state in this country where making abortion illegal is popular.
Last summer in response to abortion bans nearly 140 artists — including LIZZO, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Halsey, and John Legend — encouraged their fans to join Planned Parenthood in opposing these harmful policies by signing the letter.
