In the final Pennsylvania U.S. Senate debate last night, Pat Toomey blatantly lied about abortion, repeating a widely debunked claim peddled by Donald Trump in the final presidential debate last Wednesday. This is the same lie that Ted Cruz, Carly Fiorina, and some of the most anti-abortion politicians in this country have told —and it’s still just as false.
Quote from Meghan Eirkson, Planned Parenthood Votes:
“Pat Toomey doesn't understand or care about women’s experiences. What he said about abortion is not based in any kind of medical fact or reality –– but rather was a desperate attempt to deflect from his extreme position on the issue, which includes sending doctors who provide abortions to jail. Women in Pennsylvania don't want Pat Toomey dictating our personal health care decisions, and will be sending a resounding message to him on November 8th."
Here are the fact checks showing that Pat Toomey & Donald Trump’s false statements on abortion:
“It’s a mischaracterization of Clinton’s position, it’s a mischaracterization about what abortion looks like in the United States, and it’s a mischaracterization of how obstetricians treat late-term patients.”
“That doesn’t really happen.”
“The factually-incorrect statement was a response to host Chris Wallace’s question about late term abortions.”
“That is not at all likely.”
"According to Trump, his rival supports all abortion, even on "the final day" of pregnancy. PolitiFact's analysis of Clinton's remarks on the topic don't support that claim."
"What Trump described during the debate not only does not reflect the reality of what late-term abortion actually is, but it also fails to recognize the unimaginably difficult and painful emotional realities of the families who find themselves making the choice to have this procedure based on what they and their physicians decide is best for them and their families."
"To be clear: This is not a thing that happens."
