Planned Parenthood Action Fund Condemns Homophobic Attack from NRCC on Gina Ortiz Jones
For Immediate Release: Aug. 26, 2020
WASHINGTON — While the Republican National Convention gives a platform to people seeking to advance racist ideologies and roll back access to reproductive health care and rights this week, the National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC) attacked Gina Ortiz Jones, a candidate for Congress in TX-23, for her sexuality. Planned Parenthood Action Fund (PPAF) unequivocally condemns this homophobic attack, stands with Jones and the entire LGBTQ+ community against any and all attacks, and is proud to support Jones in the upcoming election.
Statement from Alexis McGill Johnson, president, Planned Parenthood Action Fund:
“Gina Ortiz Jones will be the incredible health care champion the people of TX-23 need, which is exactly why the NRCC is stooping so low to attempt to undermine her. Gina is a veteran, civil servant, and foreign policy expert — her sexuality has no bearing on her strength as a leader. This latest attack is despicable — this administration and its allies know they are so out of step with districts like this one that they are using retrograde scare tactics to try to drum up support, but we won’t let them. Since taking office, this administration has been systematically attacking people’s health care access and implementing policies that take away the rights of LGBTQ+ people, people of color, immigrants, people with disabilities, and those living at the intersections of these identities. We’re sure this won’t be the last ugly attack on Gina, but we are confident that the voters in TX-23 will see this cheap tactic for what it is. Gina is a strong candidate and leader, and we will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with her throughout this campaign and in Congress when she wins.”
