WASHINGTON, DC – Planned Parenthood Action Fund released the following statement today on the confirmation of Loretta Lynch as U.S. Attorney General, whose nomination was held up twice as long as the last seven Attorney General nominees combined.

Statement from Cecile Richards, President, Planned Parenthood Action Fund:

“Today’s confirmation of Loretta Lynch as our nation’s top lawyer is a historic moment. With a 30-year career protecting civil and human rights, Lynch brings an enormous amount of experience to the Department of Justice. We congratulate her on her confirmation as Attorney General, becoming the first African American woman to serve in this position.

“The fact that Senate leadership held up her confirmation for more than three months shows yet again how far they’re willing to go to score cheap political points. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell even went so far as to inexplicably tie her nomination with what should have been a bipartisan bill on human trafficking, despite the fact that she has a record of prosecuting traffickers. This is politics at it’s worst and is part of a broader agenda that is out-of-touch with the American public.

“We call on Congress to stop playing politics - and move our country forward, not backward. Today’s confirmation of Loretta Lynch is a long-overdue step in the right direction and we look forward to the Senate continuing to work in a bipartisan manner to confirm fair-minded nominees.”
