Albuquerque, NM — Today, Planned Parenthood Action Fund congratulated U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich on his reelection to the Senate. Sen. Heinrich is a consistent supporter of women and reproductive health and rights. He has worked to defend access to affordable birth control, and he strongly opposed the Trump-Pence administration’s attempts to block patients from being able to access health care at Planned Parenthood health centers. In re-electing Heinrich, New Mexicans can be certain he will continue to fight to expand access to reproductive health care and strengthen women’s rights.

Statement from Dawn Laguens, Executive Vice President, Planned Parenthood Action Fund:

We are excited that New Mexicans have chosen to send Sen. Martin Heinrich back to the Senate. He is a strong and steadfast champion for the health and rights of all people, and will oppose attacks on our nation’s program for affordable birth control and attempts to take away access to reproductive health care, including safe, legal abortion. Planned Parenthood Action Fund looks forward to standing with Sen. Heinrich as he works to improve health care access for everyone in New Mexico.

Statement from Vicki Cowart, President and CEO, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains Action Fund:

Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains Action Fund endorses and works to elect candidates who trust women to make their own health care decisions, and Sen. Martin Heinrich exemplifies those values. We look forward to continuing to work closely with Sen. Heinrich to protect and expand access to the full spectrum of sexual and reproductive rights and health care for all New Mexicans.

Sen. Heinrich is a champion for all people and their access to health care. As a senator, he:

  • Was an original cosponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act to block state-level attacks on abortion access.

  • Called on Sen. McConnell to not bring to the floor a bill that would have overturned rules protecting Title X health centers and endangered women’s health.

  • Opposed all efforts to block patients from getting care at Planned Parenthood health centers.

  • Opposed the Blunt amendment, which would have let women’s bosses decide if insurance plans cover birth control.

  • Supported the Affordable Care Act’s birth control benefit, which ensures that patients will have their birth control covered by health insurance with no copay.

  • Endorsed the Respect ABQ Women campaign, which opposed a ban on abortion later in pregnancy in Albuquerque.
