The Planned Parenthood Action Fund announced its endorsement of Christie Vilsack in Iowa’s 4th Congressional District race.  The Planned Parenthood Action Fund is the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

“The Planned Parenthood Action Fund is proud to support Christie Vilsack for Congress,” said Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund.  “The work she has done to help women in Iowa through her initiatives as Iowa’s First Lady underscores her passionate advocacy for women and women’s reproductive health and rights, and that is exactly what Iowa needs.”

Vilsack has already made great strides in supporting women and women’s health in Iowa.  Three and a half years ago she was named Executive Director of The Iowa Initiative, an organization that works to reduce the rate of unintended pregnancies among younger women in Iowa.  This has helped thousands of women gain access to the health care they need.

“We need a change in how the people of Iowa are represented in Congress,” said Jill June, president of Planned Parenthood Voters of Iowa.  “Christie Vilsack is exactly the change we need.  She will put commonsense health care needs ahead of ideology and politics, and actively defend women’s access to family planning services.”

The contrast in Iowa’s 4th Congressional District could not be clearer.  While Christie Vilsack is a strong supporter of women’s health and rights, her opponent, Congressman Steve King, has actively worked to limit the rights of women.  Among the many anti-women’s health bills he has cosponsored, one would prohibit Planned Parenthood from participating in public health programs, essentially cutting women off from their trusted health care provider.  The women of Iowa deserve better — they deserve Christie Vilsack.
