The Planned Parenthood Action Fund announces its endorsement of Dr. Richard Carmona in his bid to be elected to the U.S. Senate from Arizona. The Planned Parenthood Action Fund is the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

“We are proud to endorse Dr. Richard Carmona in his race for Senate today,” said Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. “The attacks on women’s health in Arizona have shown how critical it is to send candidates like Dr. Carmona to the U.S. Senate. In a state where we have seen bills that could end women’s birth control coverage and could block thousands of women from Planned Parenthood, Arizona women need a champion who has long fought to protect and promote women’s health representing them in Washington.”

Governor Brewer recently signed into law HB 2800 which could prohibit Planned Parenthood Arizona health centers from receiving public funding, ultimately putting services at risk for thousands of Arizonans who depend on affordable access to preventive and lifesaving treatments. But the fact that Arizonans have been coming to Planned Parenthood’s nonprofit health centers for their health care needs for more than 75 years was of no consequence to Governor Brewer, and she proceeded to sign the bill into law despite objections.

“Dr. Carmona is an outstanding candidate and champion for women’s health. As a physician, law enforcement official, and former United States surgeon general, there is no one more qualified to represent Arizona in the U.S. Senate this election year. We are excited the Planned Parenthood Action Fund has endorsed him,” said Bryan Howard, president of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona. “Arizona voters desperately need a strong and passionate supporter of women and families. With all of the attacks on women’s health in Arizona, it’s time to elect a senator who will stand with women.”
