Washington D.C. – Planned Parenthood Action Fund today endorsed U.S. Representative Patrick Murphy for U.S. Senate. Rep. Murphy has stood with Florida women to stop attacks on access to lifesaving care at Planned Parenthood health centers in the state and pushed to preserve access to safe, legal abortion, regardless of income, immigration status, insurance, or where they live.
Marco Rubio stands in stark contrast to Murphy. His failed presidential bid and Senate tenure have been punctuated by aggressive efforts to ban safe, legal abortion – without exceptions for rape or incest. In his one term as Senator, he voted to defund Planned Parenthood five times, and wants to decimate health care reform that made no-copay birth control available to over 55 million women across the country.
Statement from Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood Action Fund
“Planned Parenthood Action Fund is proud to endorse Patrick Murphy for the U.S. Senate. Patrick Murphy has been a fighter for Florida women, pushing for smart policies to ensure access to affordable birth control and safe, legal abortion. Patrick sees the importance of access to reproductive health services, like those provided by Planned Parenthood health centers, to keep Florida women healthy. Rubio’s multiple attacks aimed at defunding Planned Parenthood, cutting health care access in Florida, forcing women to pay more for birth control, and eliminating access to safe, legal abortion, would all have devastating effects on Florida women and families. Patrick Murphy puts the health and safety of Florida women first, which is why we can’t afford to stay home this election and let Marco Rubio continue his never-ending attack on women’s health.”
Statement from Lillian Tamayo, Board Member, Florida Alliance of Planned Parenthood Affiliates
“As Florida faces the direct threat of Zika virus, we have seen politicians like Marco Rubio put politics before women, attacking the ability of family planning providers to help during a public health crisis. Patrick Murphy stands with the patients of Planned Parenthood health centers, which is why we’re standing with him today.”
Statement from Barbara A. Zdravecky, Board Member, Florida Alliance of Planned Parenthood Affiliates
“Patrick Murphy is a proven leader who will defend a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions, protect patients’ access to care at Planned Parenthood health centers, and fight for women and families in the U.S. Senate.”
As Zika spreads in Florida and cases increase, Rubio has tried to target the ability of family planning providers in the areas hardest hit to help in the crisis, putting his right wing agenda before the health and safety of his constituents. His five previous votes to “defund” Planned Parenthood would have jeopardized the very health care that the CDC recommends as the primary strategy to reduce Zika-related pregnancy complications, including birth control, health education, and other family planning care. Rubio said recently that he opposes a woman’s right to an abortion even for women who have contracted the Zika virus.
Marco Rubio’s extreme anti-women, anti-abortion and anti-reproductive rights record depicts an abhorrent disregard for the health and well-being of Florida women:
He voted against at least 14 pieces of women’s health legislation, despite Florida being tied for lastwhen it comes to women’s health and well-being, and facing some of the highest cervical cancer rates in the nation.
In September 2015, Rubio voted for a medically unnecessary bill that would make it harder for women in complex situations to obtain safe, legal abortions;
He voted to defund Planned Parenthood five times;
He voted in favor of a measure that forced single mothers, including those who have been raped, to publish their personal information and detailed sexual history in newspapers in order to put their children up for adoption, a law referred to as "the Scarlet Letter law."
Patrick Murphy is the proven champion Floridians need in the U.S. Senate – he is the only candidate prioritizing women and families, at a time when reproductive rights are on the line. He is steadfast in his commitment to a woman’s right to make her own decisions about her health care, and has always opposed extremist attacks on blocking patients from care at Planned Parenthood health centers.
