WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Planned Parenthood Action Fund announced its endorsement of Mandela Barnes for U.S. Senator for Wisconsin. As a former community organizer and state representative now serving as Wisconsin’s lieutenant governor, Mandela Barnes is well prepared to be a critical voice in protecting sexual and reproductive health, including abortion access. If elected, he would be the first Black senator to represent Wisconsin.

As Wisconsin’s lieutenant governor, Barnes has led on climate change, pandemic recovery and vaccination efforts, and has been a key part of the effort to stop state-level attacks on abortion access. Earlier this summer, he shared why he is a champion for sexual and reproductive rights and what reproductive freedom meant for his own family.

Statement from Alexis McGill Johnson, president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund:

“Mandela Barnes is the right champion to represent Wisconsin in the U.S. Senate. Having seen both how anti-abortion rights politicians are advancing their agendas in Wisconsin and the necessity of protecting access to care, Mandela understands exactly what is at stake in this moment. As lieutenant governor, he serves alongside Gov. Tony Evers as a critical backstop to protect reproductive freedom in the state. As a senator, his will be a critical vote in supporting access to sexual and reproductive health care. Planned Parenthood Action Fund is proud to endorse Mandela for the fight ahead.”
