Planned Parenthood Action Fund Endorses
Sean Maloney for NY-18

Washington, DC — Planned Parenthood Action Fund announced its endorsement of Sean Patrick Maloney for New York’s 18th Congressional District today. The Action Fund is the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

“We are proud to endorse Sean Maloney for Congress today,” said Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund. “We are confident that Sean will stand up to politicians in Washington who continue to launch attacks against women’s access to health care.”

Maloney is running against Republican freshman and Tea Party favorite, Rep. Nan Hayworth in the newly reconfigured district. Congresswoman Hayworth is dangerous for women and women’s health. While in Congress, Rep. Hayworth voted to cut off Planned Parenthood's federal funding, putting at risk access to preventive health care for the 148,905 people served by federal programs who received care at New York Planned Parenthood health centers.

“For the past 25 years Sean Maloney has been working for women and women’s health. Whether in the White House under President Clinton or the New York Governor’s office, Sean has proven to be a real advocate of women’s health, and I know he will continue to do so for the women and families in the mid-Hudson Valley,” said Ruth-Ellen Blodgett, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Mid-Hudson Valley Action Fund.

“New York’s 18th district needs a representative in Congress who will fight for women and women’s health.  And at the Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic Action Fund (PPHPAF), we believe Sean Patrick Maloney is up for the job,” said PPHPAF President and CEO Reina Schiffrin. “While in Congress, Rep. Hayworth has continually put ideology and politics ahead of the commonsense health care needs of her constituents.”

“Sean Patrick Maloney understands that preventive care and birth control are economic issues for women and families, and that supporting family planning is smart fiscal policy,” said Planned Parenthood Advocates of New York President M. Tracey Brooks. "Planned Parenthood Advocates of New York has every confidence that, as a member of Congress, Sean will fight to protect and advance access to comprehensive reproductive health care."

In 2011, the 68 Planned Parenthood health centers located in New York served 216,001 patients by providing a wide range of preventive health care services, including 62,818 breast exams that detected 230 abnormal results that required further diagnosis and treatment, and 54,153 cervical cancer screenings (i.e., Pap tests) that detected 7,501 abnormal results that required further diagnosis and treatment.
