Columbus, OH – Today, Planned Parenthood Action Fund announced our endorsement of U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) for re-election to the U.S. Senate. Sen. Brown has been a powerful advocate for women; his sterling record in the U.S. Senate demonstrates his trust in women to make their own health care decisions, as does his steadfast opposition to attacks on Planned Parenthood and reproductive health care. Sen. Brown is committed not only to protecting women’s rights, but to expanding access to the full range of reproductive health care, including affordable birth control and safe, legal abortion.

Sen. Brown knows that the question of whether and when to have children is best answered by a woman and her health care provider – not politicians in Washington. Having served in the U.S. Senate for more than 10 years, he has proven time and again that he will resist any efforts to harm women’s rights and access to reproductive health care. In contrast, the anti-women’s health candidates running against Sen. Brown would be a disaster for Ohio women – some of whom have voted to block patients from accessing care at Planned Parenthood health centers, supported repealing the Affordable Care Act (ACA), or attacked access to safe and legal abortion.

For example, Rep. Jim Renacci has voted several times to block patients from accessing care at Planned Parenthood health centers and to repeal the ACA. Mike Gibbons is vehemently anti-women’s health and wants to pass dangerous abortion bans that would put women at risk. Melissa Ackison has worked with fake women’s health centers, where staff use deceptive tactics and misinformation to lie to women about abortion. By re-electing Sherrod Brown, Ohioans can trust that he will continue standing up for women and fighting against any attacks that attempt to roll back access to health care.

Statement from Dawn Laguens, Executive Vice President, Planned Parenthood Action Fund:

Planned Parenthood Action Fund is proud to stand with Sen. Sherrod Brown and endorse his re-election to the U.S. Senate. Sen. Brown is a stalwart champion of women and the life-saving care provided by Planned Parenthood health centers. He is firm in his belief that health care is a right, not a privilege. Ohioans can count on him to continue fighting for Planned Parenthood patients – just as he’s done for over a decade in the U.S. Senate.

“Over 80,000 Ohioans rely on Planned Parenthood health centers for basic health care, and many would go without health care if they weren’t able to come to Planned Parenthood. While the Trump-Pence administration is focused on rolling back women’s rights, Ohioans need to re-elect a champion who will fight to protect access to care at Planned Parenthood health centers. By re-electing Sherrod Brown to the U.S. Senate, the Buckeye State can be rest assured that they have an advocate in the Senate who will never stop standing up for access to reproductive health care – no matter what.

Statement from Iris E. Harvey, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio:

Sen. Brown is a tireless fighter for women’s health and reproductive rights. In sharp contrast, his conservative opponents want to play partisan politics with women’s health – something we know far too well in Ohio, which has enacted 20 restrictions on abortion under Gov. John Kasich. Sen. Brown has stood strong against attacks on health care; he voted every time to bring down Trumpcare, the worst bill for women in a generation, which would have ripped away health insurance from millions of Americans. We can’t wait to send him back to the Senate.

Statement from Senator Sherrod Brown:

Planned Parenthood health centers provide affordable health care, education, and support to thousands of Ohio women and families — a lifeline to many Ohioans who have nowhere else to turn for access to quality care. Thank you to Planned Parenthood Action Fund for your ongoing work advocating on behalf of these families, and for your support of my reelection. Together, we will continue to fight for affordable health care options for all Ohioans and protect the right of women to make their own health care decisions.

Sen. Sherrod Brown has a 100 percent rating from Planned Parenthood Action Fund.
