Planned Parenthood Action Fund Endorses Senator Michael Bennet
For Immediate Release: May 11, 2012
The Planned Parenthood Action Fund announced its endorsement of Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO) in the upcoming election for Colorado’s U.S. Senate seat. The Planned Parenthood Action Fund is the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
“The Planned Parenthood Action Fund is proud to endorse Senator Michael Bennet,” said Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. “In the U.S. Senate, Michael Bennet has been a passionate advocate for women and women’s reproductive rights and made it a priority to promote and protect women’s health.”
Senator Bennet has worked to improve access to quality health care, especially reproductive health care for women; protect a woman’s right to choose; and invest in prevention programs, including family planning services and lifesaving breast cancer screenings.
“Voters in Colorado want a champion of women’s health as their senator. That champion is Michael Bennet,” said Vicki Cowart, president of Planned Parenthood Votes Colorado. “Michael Bennet is the only candidate in the race that puts the health care needs of Colorado’s women ahead of ideology and politics.”
Bennet is being challenged by Ken Buck, who is out of touch with mainstream Colorado voters on women’s health issues. Buck believes abortion should be outlawed, even in the cases of rape or incest. Buck would also deny women access to common, safe, and effective forms of birth control and emergency contraception. Additionally, Buck supports Amendment 62, the ballot initiative that, if passed, would ban all abortions even in cases of rape and incest and involve government in the personal, private medical decisions that women make every day. Conversely, Bennet opposes Amendment 62.
“The choice for Colorado voters is clear. Michael Bennet has been a strong and passionate voice for women’s health since his first day in the U.S. Senate,” said Cowart. “Ken Buck would rather play ideological games with women’s health and restrict access to women’s reproductive health care. Coloradans deserve a leader who knows that every woman’s health really does matter. Michael Bennet is that leader.”
The election will be held on November 2.
