WASHINGTON — Last night, Planned Parenthood Action Fund hosted a members-only event with Sara Gideon, an Action Fund-endorsed champion running to represent Maine in the U.S. Senate. Joining more than 120 Action Fund members, Gideon answered questions from members who shared their personal stories about the importance of sexual and reproductive health care and shared her own story about being a patient at a Planned Planned health center. Gideon discussed her commitment to protecting the sexual and reproductive health and rights of Mainers if elected to the Senate. Last night made it clear that Action Fund members are fired up and ready to do everything they can to help elect Sara Gideon.

Statement from Alexis McGill Johnson, acting president, Planned Parenthood Action Fund:

“Mainers don’t back down. Like them, we at Planned Parenthood Action Fund also believe people deserve access to the tools they need to live their best lives – that’s why what’s happened with Senator Collins is so heartbreaking. For years, Mainers had someone who fought for them and worked to keep Washington out of their most personal decisions. Then she stopped listening.

“We have a responsibility now. We cannot watch our most basic rights and freedoms be taken away. I’m so thrilled Sara Gideon is running for U.S. Senate, because we need someone who is going to fight for Mainers. The Action Fund could not be more excited to support Sara and help get her across the finish line this November because we know she’s the champion that Maine needs in the U.S. Senate.”

Statement from Sara Gideon, candidate for U.S. Senate:

"No matter their income, race, socioeconomic background, or what part of the state that they live in, every person has the right to safely make their own health decisions, control their own future, and get care from the provider of their choice. Senator Collins has sided with Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump again and again, supporting far-right, anti-choice nominees for lifetime appointment on the federal bench. Here in Maine, we’ve worked to protect and expand reproductive rights, and I’m running for Senate to bring that same kind of leadership to Washington."

This event was part of Planned Parenthood Action Fund’s effort to ensure members can hear from candidates in critical Senate races. This year, Planned Parenthood advocacy and political organizations are all in, and investing deeply to engage voters and shift the balance of power in this country by electing leaders who will stand with and fight to ensure that all people have access to sexual and reproductive health care, including abortion.
