Planned Parenthood Calls On Congress to Pass a Clean Dream Act Now
For Immediate Release: Jan. 22, 2018
Hundreds of Thousands of DACA Recipients Continue to Live in Fear of Deportation
WASHINGTON D.C. - Planned Parenthood Action Fund released the following statement after the Senate passed a funding deal ending the #TrumpShutdown of the U.S. government. The funding bill leaves hundreds of thousands of Dreamers and immigrant youth who have grown up in the United States at risk of deportation and leaves uncertainty around critical health programs. This comes after congressional Republican leaders spent months on unpopular and dangerous attacks on access to women’s health care and care at Planned Parenthood.
The bill also fails to address the future of expired programs, like maternal child health home visiting programs and funding for evidence-based teen pregnancy prevention programs under the Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP).
Statement from Dawn Laguens, Executive Vice President, Planned Parenthood Action Fund:
“Immigrant youth, business leaders, and health care advocates have all called on Congress to stand united and act on the bipartisan solution on the table. We are disappointed that the Senate failed to do that today. Make no mistake: President Trump’s unilateral decision to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and constantly undermine bipartisan negotiations — coupled with the Republican leadership’s failure to govern — caused this shutdown. This fight is far from over. We are committed to ensuring that immigrants and Dreamers have access to health care and do not live in fear of deportation. We will continue to press members in the Senate and the House, on both sides of the aisle, for a speedy, bipartisan solution for immigrant youth and for a clean Dream Act.
“Time and time again, Trump and Republican leadership have proven that they would rather wreak chaos and attack people’s health care than do the hard work of governing. Now is the time for Congress to stop the shenanigans and act. Over the coming days, you will hear from people from across the country sending a clear demand for Congress to act now.”
