Planned Parenthood Affiliates to Participate in 40 Public Service Events Nationwide

WASHINGTON, DC — In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy of service to our country, Planned Parenthood staff and volunteers will gather across the country on Monday, January 19, 2009, to participate in the King Day of Service. Nationwide, affiliates will participate in 40 community service projects as part of President-elect Barack Obama’s call for an increased commitment and participation in a National Day of Service.

“It is an honor for Planned Parenthood to join in paying homage to Dr. King and his legacy of public service,” said Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. “On the eve of the historic inauguration of President-elect Obama, we are privileged to promote the tremendous example of service to one’s community that both men exemplify. It’s an example that we strive to follow every day as we work to ensure access to quality, affordable health care for all.”

As part of Planned Parenthood’s year-round commitment to community service, and on the eve of President-elect Obama’s inauguration, Planned Parenthood affiliates across the country will participate in a wide range of local events. Planned Parenthood of Central Ohio will hold a “women’s essentials” drive, gathering basic items, such as toiletries, for women in need. In Alabama and Mississippi, staff and volunteers will hold a canned food drive. And affiliates in Georgia will adopt an Atlanta elementary school for a day, working to beautify the school’s exterior through painting and landscaping.
