Planned Parenthood Statement on President Biden’s State of the Union
For Immediate Release: March 7, 2024
Washington, D.C. — This evening, President Joe Biden gave his 2024 State of the Union address, where he discussed the progress his administration has made, and the work still to be done to improve the lives of Americans across the country.
In his remarks, President Biden spoke about the need to restore reproductive rights and voting rights. In response to the president’s address, Planned Parenthood Action Fund President and CEO Alexis McGill Johnson issued the following statement:
“The national reproductive health crisis requires every leader to fight for our right to control our own bodies and futures. We are grateful to President Biden, Vice President Harris, and leaders across the administration, who understand the harm done to patients and providers because the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Reproductive health care is under attack, from birth control to IVF to abortion care. Patients, providers, and communities need unwavering, vocal support, coupled with action from our leaders in the White House, through the halls of Congress, and on court benches throughout the country.
“We appreciate the steps the Biden-Harris administration has taken to address this ongoing health crisis. They have amplified heartbreaking and infuriating stories and used their power to get patients the support and accurate information they need to navigate abortion bans across the country. Planned Parenthood Action Fund looks forward to continuing this work with the Biden-Harris administration in the months and years ahead.”
Planned Parenthood leaders — including patient storytellers and provider advocates — and other advocates for reproductive freedom from across the country had a large presence at the address. Several joined as guests of members of Congress, including Alexis, who accompanied Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer:
“As a fellow New Yorker, it is an honor to be a guest of Sen. Schumer tonight for the State of the Union Address and to have the partnership of leaders like him as we navigate the fight ahead. Our ability to decide whether, when, and how to build families, determine the course of our own futures, and participate as full and equal members of society is at stake. The strong presence of reproductive rights advocates, patient advocates, and providers during this evening’s address is a reminder that our leaders not only understand this crisis, but are with us for the work ahead.”
