Ted Cruz is Allergic to Facts”

“John Kasich has enacted more laws to restrict women’s health than Ted Cruz has.”

Washington, D.C. -- Ted Cruz just released an ad where he directly faces a camera and flat-out lies to voters for a straight five minutes. As Ted Cruz has continued to falter in South Carolina, he’s resorted to flat out lies about Planned Parenthood — leaning on indicted criminals to boost his campaign. His campaign isfacing criticism over an ad pulled because of an actor’s past work history, and it seems Cruz is getting desperate. Today’s  ad from the Cruz campaign hits a new low, centering on the discredited anti-abortion videos produced by indicted criminal David Daleiden.

FACT CHECK: Ted Cruz’s Latest Video

Claim: “I will sign any legislation put on my desk to defend the least of these, including legislation that defends the rights of all persons, without exception other the life of the mother.”

  • Fact Check: True, and terrifying. This means if, as happened in Paraguay, an 11-year old girl is raped, Cruz would force the girl to give birth to her rapist's’ baby.

Claim: “I will not only defund Planned Parenthood, but I will instruct that Department of Justice to investigate Planned Parenthood and to prosecute any and all criminal conduct, which those videos that we saw from the Center for Medical Progress, so powerfully evidenced.”

  • Fact Check: The videos are lies, and the people who made them have been arrested for breaking the law. When a grand jury in Texas did investigate the claims behind the videos, they not only cleared Planned Parenthood of all wrongdoing, they indicted the makers of the videos on felony charges. Not only that, but officials in twelve states (Nevada, Kansas, Florida, Ohio, Washington, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri and South Dakota) have already concluded investigations into claims that Planned Parenthood profited from fetal tissue donation and each one has cleared Planned Parenthood of wrongdoing. Officials in eight states (California, Iowa, Delaware, Idaho, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Virginia, and Colorado) have declined to even investigate citing a lack of any evidence to suggest wrongdoing.

Claim: “The Democratic Party is almost entirely beholden to Planned Parenthood and its gruesome interests.”

  • Fact Check: It’s good to know that Ted Cruz considers protecting women’s health care -- and providing cancer screenings, birth control, well-woman exams, and STD testing and treatment  “gruesome.” It’s true that both Democrats and Republicans have fought to protect women’s access to health care, and their right to chose Planned Parenthood as a health care provider.

Claim: “Now Donald Trump is the only candidate left in the Republican field who won’t even pledge to defund Planned Parenthood.”

  • Fact Check: False! Donald Trump is just as bad as his fellow Republican candidates when it comes to women’s health --- in fact he even called for shutting down the government in order to block patients from seeking care at Planned Parenthood.

Claim: “Which is why Planned Parenthood named Donald Trump their favorite Republican last fall”

  • Fact Check: We’re not sure where this came from, but it’s 100% false. While we have given the Barry Goldwater award in the past for Republican champions of women’s health, not only did Donald Trump never receive one, but he wouldn’t even qualify. As we’ve said over and over, Donald Trump would be a disaster for women’s health and for patients who rely on Planned Parenthood for health care. He would ban access to safe, legal abortion, block patients from accessing care at Planned Parenthood, and slash insurance coverage of birth control.

Claim: “If there was ever an award that a Republican politician should be ashamed to receive, that’s it”

  • Fact Check: Unlike Ted Cruz, we don’t have to make up awards that politicians should be ashamed of. Ted Cruz was awarded the “Golden Grinch” award by Senate Cafeteria workers. That’s pretty shameful.

Statement from Dawn Laguens, Executive Vice President of Planned Parenthood Action Fund:

“Ted Cruz wants to appoint himself General in the war on women, but in reality, he’s no different than the rest of the Republican field when it comes to restricting women’s health. In fact, John Kasich has enacted more laws to restrict women’s health than Ted Cruz has. The only real difference is that Ted Cruz is relying on lies, fake videos, and indicted criminals to do so.

“Every Republican candidate running for president is terrible on women’s health. Donald Trump would ban access to abortion, block patients from accessing care at Planned Parenthood, and would eliminate insurance coverage for birth control. Let’s be clear --- whoever emerges as the Republican nominee would be a disaster for women’s health. The American people time and time again have shown strong support for Planned Parenthood --- and have no appetite for slashing access to birth control, cancer screenings, HIV testing, and other essential reproductive health care.”

Despite baseless, flat-out lies by Ted Cruz, 14 national polls have shown widespread popular support for Planned Parenthood and the care it provides --- and strong opposition to attempts to block patients from accessing care at the non-profit health care provider.
