GOP presidential hopefuls are currently gathering in Atlanta to stand side by side with extreme right-wing pundit Erick Erickson — infamous for his hostility to women and incendiary remarks that include comparing pregnant women to “female animals” and referring to a female Democratic candidate as “Abortion Barbie” — at a conference called “RedState Gathering” (his blog is called “RedState.com”).

Erickson has been one of the loudest voices in the call to shut down the government in order to defund Planned Parenthood, and has stated he will ask each candidate if they “will support a government shutdown if that is what it took to defund Planned Parenthood.”

Quote from Dawn Laguens, Executive Vice President of Planned Parenthood Action Fund:

“This week we saw the leading GOP presidential candidates take extreme positions far outside what most Americans believe — supporting bans on abortion with no exceptions for rape, incest or even a woman’s life and invoking the Constitution in support of “personhood,” which would criminalize abortion and could even outlaw some forms of birth control. Is it any surprise this weekend they’re doubling down and aligning themselves with a man loudly calling to shut down the government unless they get their way and block millions of women across the country from accessing basic, preventive care — like cancer screenings, birth control, and well-woman exams?”
