Abortion Turns Out Again, Winning Beshear a Second Term

Kentuckians reject anti-abortion extremism, call on Beshear to fight for their reproductive freedom
LOUISVILLE, KY – Kentucky voters have made their voices heard in voting to re-elect Governor Andy Beshear for a second term. Beshear made abortion access a focal point of his campaign, highlighting the extreme disconnect that anti-abortion politicians have with constituents across the commonwealth, showing once again that abortion is a winning issue.
Statement from Tamarra Wieder, Kentucky State Director for Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates of Kentucky (PPAA-KY):
“Abortion and birth control have won Andy Beshear a second term as Governor of Kentucky,” said Tamarra Wieder, Kentucky State Director for PPAA-KY. “The fundamental right to reproductive health and freedom are under attack like never before and Kentuckians want someone at the helm to fight for their futures. Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates congratulates Governor Beshear in defeating one of the most aggressive anti-abortion politicians to lead in the state of Kentucky.”
Statement from Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO, Planned Parenthood Action Fund:
“Once again, Kentuckians have made it clear that they support abortion rights. Through a clear rebuke of Daniel Cameron’s anti-abortion rhetoric, lies, and last-ditch effort to soften his well-documented stance against reproductive freedom, Kentuckians showed that they will not let politicians make decisions about their bodies, lives, and futures. This victory would not have been possible without the advocates and organizers that put abortion front and center in this election.”
Planned Parenthood Action Kentucky (PPAK) invested in a multi-pronged campaign to make reproductive health care and abortion front and center. PPAK mobilized its volunteer base to reject Attorney General Daniel Cameron and his anti-abortion extremism, doubling the number of doors knocked during the last gubernatorial race in 2019, from 5,069 doors to nearly 11 thousand. Planned Parenthood has spent 42% more in Kentucky than it did in 2019 in order to take back control of our bodies and lives.
Planned Parenthood organizations have been fighting for freedom, opportunity, and equality for all across the commonwealth since 1932—we look forward to working with Governor Beshear in the days and months to come to restore and secure those rights.
