Planned Parenthood Votes Praises Ige and Legislative Leaders for Championing SB 501

HONOLULU – Today, Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest and Hawaii (PPVNH) praised Governor Ige for signing Senate Bill 501 into law as Act 200. Now, limited service pregnancy centers (LSPCs) in Hawaii must protect the privacy of health care information, ensure notification for consumers that publicly-funded family planning services are available through the state, and provide them with immediate pregnancy test results. LSPCs include anti-abortion organizations that promote themselves as health care providers and offer free pregnancy tests and ultrasounds but until now were not following health care and privacy regulations.

“We are thrilled that these protections are now the law of the state,” said Laurie Field, Hawaii Public Affairs Manager at PPVNH. “Women who enter LSPCs are walking into a trap. Thankfully, our elected officials recognized this and, in passing this law, ensured that everyone has access to accurate and private information about their bodies and their health care.”

While Hawaii moves forward with progressive policies, Congress continues to push disastrous health care legislation impacting millions. The Senate health care bill will "defund" Planned Parenthood, cutting millions of patients off from the doctors and nurses they know and trust. With essential health benefits gutted, coverage for maternity care or visits to the emergency room could disappear.

Millions of the sickest, poorest Americans could be priced out of the insurance market completely, making the need for states, like Hawaii, to pass proactive policies that ensure access to high quality, medically accurate health care.

It’s clear that Americans don’t want to see Congress block people from accessing preventive care at Planned Parenthood. Just this week, a new Quinnipiac University poll showed that 80 percent of American voters oppose “defunding” Planned Parenthood, including 67 percent of Republicans. This support for the care Planned Parenthood provides has stayed consistent over time. In March of this year, a Quinnipiac poll also found that 80 percent of voters oppose so-called “defunding” Planned Parenthood.

“While the U.S. Senate continues to fight over unpopular health care legislation with devastating consequences, Hawaii is forging ahead to ensure all women have access to accurate, comprehensive reproductive health care information,” said Field.
