Planned Parenthood Applauds Chobani’s Decision to Support Employees Seeking Abortion Care
For Immediate Release: May 12, 2022
“Chobani’s decision will make it possible for thousands of Idahoans to get the care they need. But I want to be clear: It should never have come to this point.”
BOISE, ID — This morning Chobani CEO Hamdi Ulukaya announced the company will begin covering transportation, lodging, and childcare costs for employees and their dependents who need to travel out of state to access health care, including abortion. In response, Planned Parenthood’s affiliate in Idaho praised the company’s announcement and called on other Idaho employers to follow Chobani’s lead.
“Thank you, Hamdi Ulukaya, for recognizing the importance of abortion care and Idahoans’ access to critical health care,” said Rebecca Gibron, CEO of Planned Parenthood Great Northwest, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky. “This is a major step to defend the health and safety of Idahoans. I urge other employers to follow Chobani’s lead and prove that they truly care about their employees’ health and wellbeing. We at Planned Parenthood are committed to working with Chobani and any employers who join them to help patients access abortion care out of state.”
Mistie DelliCarpini-Tolman, Idaho State Director for Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates said, “Idaho’s anti-abortion state legislators have failed the people of Idaho. In an effort to bow to an extremist minority, they have abdicated their responsibility to protect the health and safety of Idahoans, leaving businesses to pick up their slack. Chobani’s decision will make it possible for thousands of Idahoans to get the care they need. But I want to be clear: It should never have come to this point. Idahoans deserve better from their legislators.”
Idaho has a full trigger ban that would completely ban abortions in the state, with only limited exceptions, if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, the constitutional right to abortion. The draft Supreme Court opinion leaked last week suggests the Court will likely overturn Roe in June, leaving Idahoans without access to critical medical care.
